Wood floor maintenance

A fresh coat.
Every few years.

Wear and tear on timber is inevitable, but you can reduce it and make your floor last longer.

Most floor finishes last around 3 to 5 years, depending on how much traffic the floor gets. Reapply a coat of sealant every few years and you can avoid a complete refurbishment.

Often a simple buff and coat, or a wax treatment, is all it takes to keep your floor in premium condition.

Finishes

Oil or water based?

  • Oil based finishes

A slightly shorter lifespan, but we can reapply them locally in high traffic areas.

  • Water based polyurethanes

A more hardwearing surface, but more work to put right when they wear through.

Maintenance FAQ

Questions, answered.

Quick answers to common maintenance questions.

All frequently asked questions
How often should I have my floor maintained?

It depends on how much traffic the floor gets. It's always best to treat the floor before the finish wears through completely, as this avoids the need for a full restoration.

Which is better, oil or lacquer?

It depends on how much traffic the floor will get and the look and feel you're after.

An oil finish leaves the wood looking and feeling more natural, but wears through quicker and needs a little more maintenance. A lacquer finish is more durable, but won't look as natural. With the right primer under the lacquer, you can get a slightly more natural look.

I have scratches in my floor. Can they be fixed?

Most surface scratches can be repaired, either by sanding the floor back to bare wood and refinishing it, or by treating the affected areas. Sanding also removes any dirt that has worked into the surface of the wood.

Light scratches that don't go through the finish can often be hidden by simply resealing the floor.
