Choosing a timber floor specialist to install your hardwood or softwood floor is a key decision if you want your investment to last for many years to come.

Unlike other floor coverings, a real wood floor behaves like a living, breathing material once it's down. So it's vital to have it installed by professionals who know how wood floors behave.

Old stairs.
New timber.

An old staircase doesn't always need to be replaced. Cladding your staircase with new timber makes it look like new, for a fraction of the cost of replacing it.

Typical workflow

Plan ahead.

Depending on the supplier and the product you choose, the whole process can take anywhere from two to four weeks.

When you plan your wood floor installation, allow time for:

  • Supplier delivery lead times
  • Acclimatisation, if required
  • Drying times, if applicable

Step by step

In most cases, the process from start to finish goes like this:

  1. Site visit to discuss and confirm options
  2. Order and delivery of your flooring
  3. Acclimatisation (if applicable)
  4. Installation
  5. Sanding and sealing (if applicable)
  6. Cure time (if applicable)

Allow time to acclimatise

Some hardwood floors need an acclimatisation period of up to 2 weeks before they're installed. Build it into your plans.

Installation FAQ

Questions, answered.

Quick answers to common installation questions.

All frequently asked questions
How long will my installation take?

It mostly depends on the size of the job. The layout matters too: the more complex the area, the longer it takes. As a rough guide, we usually allow a day for every 15 to 20 square metres.

If time is tight, consider a pre-finished floor. It needs no sanding or sealing, which speeds up the installation significantly.

What is acclimatisation?

Acclimatisation means letting the wood adjust to the room it will be installed in. Without it, gaps can open along the joins after the floor is laid.

To acclimatise the timber, unwrap any packaging and stack the boards in a lattice with spaces between them, so the air can circulate. Leave them for 7 to 10 days before installation.

I have underfloor heating. Can I have a wood floor?

Yes. A wood floor over underfloor heating needs a little more care and preparation to avoid excessive shrinkage once it's laid.

Depending on the width of board you'd like, an engineered board may be the better choice, as it moves less. Narrower floorboards are fine to use with underfloor heating.

Whichever you choose, give the flooring plenty of time to acclimatise with the underfloor heating running. This limits any movement after installation.

I live in an apartment. Can I have a wood floor?

Check your building's rules before you install a wood floor. Some management companies have strict rules on wood flooring because of the sound that travels through the floorboards.

In most cases, a high-density sound insulating underlay overcomes this by stopping the sound travelling to the floors below. It can be up to 25mm thick, so make sure there's room for the underlay and the boards together. Traditional floorboards are generally 18mm to 20mm thick.
